Exploring Stanly County's Wine Trail!

As you know, the Central Park area is comprised of some of the best natural resources in the state of North Carolina. One of these resources is the great vineyards that are available. I took some friends into Stanly County where we explored two great vineyards- the Uwharrie Vineyards and the Dennis Vineyards. We did tastings of a wide variety of wines and toured the establishments. It was a great Saturday!

Some History about the Uwharrie Wine Trail:

The Uwharrie Mountains Wine Trail is located in the heart of North Carolina. According to geologists, the Uwharries were created from an ancient chain of volcanoes. Formed over 500 million years ago, the Uwharries are the oldest mountain range in North America's documented history. The range lies in the heart of Stanly County and surrounding areas.

Stanly County has many official award winning wineries in the heart of the Uwharrie Mountain Range. Located just 35 minutes from Charlotte, visitors can easily travel and visit the wineries. You can take tours of their entire commercial operations, from grape growing and crushing, to fermentation and aging, and finally to filtering and bottling; you can see how award winning wineries produce their wines from start to finish.

Live Music at Native Vines Winery

Here's something fun to do if you're in the Lexington area and like good music and a refreshing drink.

The Native Vines winery is putting together a summer music series held very 2nd and 4th Saturday starting July 12. The event will run from 5-10pm and includes a wine tasting and light hor doeuvres. There is a $10 admission, those admitted will be allowed to bring a cooler but outside alcohol is prohibited on premises.

No particular genre of music will be favored over any other and folks looking for a bargain can purchase a season pass to all 6 concerts in advance for $45.

Everyone interested should visit the Native Vines Winery website for more details.

Wine Making Classes in Salisbury

As America rapidly warms to the thought of drinking wine more Americans are taking time to visit vineyards for tastings and seeking more information on their favorite varietals.

In the midst of the emerging wine market is the increasingly popular pastime of making wine at home. It is not uncommon to see Central Park residents trying their hand at growing grapes and now those residents have a class where they can learn to make wine for themselves.

Old Stone Winery in Salisbury, NC is offering a wine making class on May 8th from 6-9pm. The class will be taught by wine maker David Brown and is limited to the first 20 students and the fee is $45 per person (paid in advance.)

Sounds like fun to us! I recently picked-up a cookbook published in the 1960s that gave an extensive set of recipes for home wine making. The process was nothing I could figure out on my own so a class like this should be a great way to start a wine making hobby.

Those interested can contact the vineyard at 704-279-0930.
